One of the (if not THE) best pieces I've read from you! Love the nod to developmental psychology and Ken Wilber. Thoroughly recommend Integral Theory for anyone interested in that stuff

I wish more people talked about Integral Theory! You’ve got a keen eye, nice spotting my little nod to Wilber haha

“At Stage 3, your identity gets shaped by people around you.” Family, culture, friends, algorithms. Add the one I lived inside for years: coffee break or lunch conversations related to career path, progression, promotions, compensation and so on. Underneath them I see a rather more simple maybe basic desire of people to be recognized to feel significant to feel part of something bigger than them. Which is why your question, “How much of it did you actually choose?”, has a second half for me: what need was the code serving?

What looks easy from the outside is usually just the part of the story we arrived in time to see. We miss the awkward attempts, the wrong turns and the years of doing something badly before it started to look natural. That’s why comparing your beginning to someone else’s fluency can distort your judgement completely.

Loved this and very relevant to life right now. I'm currently developing a community leadership program the leans into that stage 3 > 4 transition (using Kegan's Immunity to Change). Are there some sources you'd point to that help understand his pedagogy?
